BENEFITS TO SPONTANEITY

November 24, 2022

Ok, let’s be honest… I teach planning, forethought, setting goals, and strategy. Most of this is what business coaching is all about. However, there has to be a place in all of this for spontaneity and flexibility! We must recognize that plans are never perfect, and it doesn’t always turn out as we think they will. Furthermore, opportunities come up randomly, and we need to be able to seize those, even if they were never calculated… sometime ESPECIALLY because they were never calculated. So, what benefits can come from exercising spontaneity in our business? Great question; I’d love to answer!

  1. It’s great training that leads to being comfortable with risk!
  2. It eliminates analysis paralysis because you don’t have the TIME to overanalyze!
  3. It builds confidence. Making a decision and knowing you can trust your intuition makes us more comfortable with making those decisions on the spot.
  4. It keeps you in the now by forcing you to use all of your faculties to make a decision for this moment.
  5. Sometimes we don’t get ALL the data or have time to do hours of research. Being spontaneous teaches you to trust your gut and limited information to make decisions.
  6. It allows you to use creative inspiration from anywhere to develop a new idea or change things up. Those inspirations can be fleeting, so taking advantage of them when they arrive could give you an edge over the competition.
  7. Encourages you to go with the flow. Businesses are fluid, and a plan is just a guess as to what will happen. Being spontaneous allows leaders to pivot, shift and make adjustments as needed.
  8. It can be fun and allow you to have experiences you wouldn’t have otherwise been able to enjoy by overplanning.
  9. The aforementioned FUN can lead to greater happiness, which only happens when you are experiencing the current moment to its fullness!

Flex that spontaneity muscle regularly. Start with small decisions to build your comfort with it, and add more challenging situations as you go. Trust yourself, your knowledge, and your leadership with each decision and build your confidence. It’s not going to go perfectly all the time, so make sure you take the lessons as they come. Your brain, business, and gut will thank you in the long run!!
