HOLIDAY EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION

January 2, 2023

In order to retain talented employees and attract more top talent, keeping your employee moral high is paramount. You should be doing this all year round, but when an opportunity like the winter holiday arises, not using the time to show your employee appreciation is a missed opportunity.

It’s no secret that COVID-19 has changed the way that employees look at work (or quitting their jobs in order to understand what a better work life balance looks like for them), and spending the time to make sure that your talented staff feels seen, heard, and appreciated is among the best ways that an employer can retain top talent.

Here are some ideas for employee appreciation to utilize that could help you retain more of your all-star employees in the following year.

TAKING TIME TO RECOGNIZE IMPROVED EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE

Many of us take a moment or two at the end of the year to look back at the year we just made it through and taking time to show gratitude for employees that have turned a new corner, or really shown initiative can inspire and motivate them to do well in the coming year.

Whether that’s in front of their peers, or at a more heartfelt private moment is up to you, but showing gratitude for the people who work hard to make sure your business remains successful is the least you can do.

SHOWING UP FOR EMPLOYEES WHO SHOW UP FOR YOU

These are the business professionals who work hard every day. They may not be the loudest and the most boisterous employees, but the amount of a typical business that relies on men and women who come in every day and give it their all is huge.

It’s so easy to skip over this under-the-radar type of worker because they don’t demand recognition. That doesn’t mean they don’t need to hear that they’ve done a good job too. Take time to recoginize them specifically even if it’s just a two-minute pop into the office with a hand delivered gift card.

FEELING STUCK?

Anyone can go through the employee appreciation version of writer’s block. Here is a list of inspiration to help you show your employees how much you love them.

  • Techy gear like smartphone accessories
  • Tickets to “the big game” whatever that may be to your employee
  • Housekeeping services
  • Food deliveries
  • Additional PTO
  • Concert tickets
  • Spa day
  • Travel related gifts

If these ideas don’t get you pumped for some good old fashioned employee appreciation, there is always the time-tested gift that employees everywhere love.

You guessed it – a holiday bonus. Many employees report finding themselves more motivated by bonuses than by anything else, though studies support that smaller gifts do carry a lot of weight.
