LIFE COACHING VS. BUSINESS COACHING

May 18, 2022

First and foremost, coaching is about helping you reach your goals, regardless of what they are. Coaches are guides, advisors, sounding boards, and accountability partners. You find a coach when you are at an impasse with a situation in your life or business.  Clients continue to ask, “what is the difference between life coaching and business coaching and how do I know which one I need?” So today, we’re going to answer that.

WHAT IS LIFE COACHING?

Life coaches focus on personal issues such as confidence, personal goals, and hard-to-navigate situations related to daily life. Sometimes life coaches teach clients how to react or behave in certain situations, polishing overall attitude or well-being. Also, a life coach can help you deal with things like skill development, habits and routines, motivation, proactiveness, self-awareness and boundaries. Life coaching everything that directly relates to a person’s personal happiness or self-satisfaction.

WHAT IS BUSINESS COACHING?

Alternatively, a business coach works with a client on a professional level, often specifically related to starting, owning or running businesses. However, you don’t have to run a business to hire a business coach, you can also be in a position of leadership for a business. Business coaches help educate their clients on the inner workings of businesses. They partner, advise and collaborate with their clients to build strategies and systems that will make the business more successful.

Business coaches work with their clients to design and develop a more fulfilling professional life.

WHAT TYPE OF COACHING DO I NEED?

Now here is where it gets tricky, in business coaching there CAN be quite a lot of overlap because most business owners invest their whole life in building their business. Everyone knows, especially in this day and age, that our work doesn’t stop when we hit the front door of our home. Business coaches often find themselves delving into the “life” side of things. We talk to our clients about boundaries, time management, values and habits. But for the sake of this discussion the dividing line for what type of coach to seek out is:

  1. Is your business going to be involved in your coaching conversations? If so, I’d suggest you seek out a business coach.
  2. Is your life going to be involved in your business coaching conversations? If the answer is yes, I’d recommend that  you seek out a business coach that is also a life coach. There are business coaches that stick to the numbers and systems of business, which can be incredibly valuable if that is what you need.
